mabon

Mabon

When the air stars to cool taking on the apple crispness that sings in the Autumn it is the time of Mabon . You can feel the days growing shorter and the nights growing longer . The leaves in the trees take on their crimson reds and golden yellows before falling to the ground. These leaves then decay and turn into fertilizer to feed the soil , starting the cycle of life again .
With Mabon we also say farewell to Persephone as it is at this time she journeys into the underworld to await the spring . With that we should remember the pain and dispair of her mother Demeter the mother earth as she mourns for her dear lost child. Notice how the flowers die and dry up leaving behind seeds for the next year. Remeber to send healing and thanks to her at this time of balance of dark and light .
But what does this mean to the people of modern times who are so disconnected from the Earth? Mabon is a wonderful time to get back to nature.Take a trip out into the woods to see the leaves change color. Visit a farmers market or pick-it-yourself apple farm and look for fruits and veggies to use in a "thanks giving" fest, remembering that you are giving thanks for all that you are harvesting . Think of all the things that you have sown since the spring. Think about what you want to harvest in yourself and take with you into the dark half of the year and what you want to leave behind to die off.
